CHALLENGE
How can Greenpeace inform and mobilize people on the topic of ocean protection?

Since January 2026 the global Ocean Treaty went into force. With the treaty we can create a network of protected areas in the oceans. FYI: The Dutch government signed the Treaty, but did not ratify it yet.

INSIGHT
As long as no one has responsibility over the oceans, it becomes everyone's problem.

Because the Oceans belong to no one, no one can take direct responsibility for it's protection.

APPROACH
We're giving individuals a chance to take ownership to enforce political responsibility.

Buy a piece of ocean and become its official guardian. Your contribution directly funds restoration and protection efforts. Through this symbolic act, you instantly sign the petition for healthy oceans, which results in pressuring the Dutch government to ratify the Ocean Treaty.

SOLUTION
The pressure pushes the government to do a better job at protecting the oceans.

By encouraging people to take ‘responsibility’ for specific areas of the ocean, we are setting in motion a striking movement which, as well as raising awareness, is also prompting government action.
